~ The Most Important Things
~
by Betty Chypre
|
Ask a craftsman his
most pressing problem, and he’ll probably answer, “Time”
or Time management.” Making good use of our time,
and getting things done on time, are universal
problems. How do you
manage to get everything done?
Did
you hear the story about the professor who put a large jar on
the desk and took several rocks and carefully placed them inside the
jar? When the rocks came all the way to the top of the jar, he asked
the class, “Can I get anything more in the
jar?” They said, "No."
Then he
took a handful of pebbles and carefully dropped them between the rocks
in the jar and asked the class: “Will anything more
fit in the jar?” Again, they said "No".
Then he took a
handful of sand and sprinkled it between the rocks and the pebbles. “Can
I get anything more into the jar?”
“No.” “Is it full now?"
he asked. They agreed It was full.
At that point he
poured a full cup of water into the jar, and a little more. “It’s
still not full” he said as he slowly poured some
salt into the water and rocked the jar gently to help it dissolve.
The
point is: Put the big rocks in the jar first
. If you make time for big projects and just let the smaller
ones flow around them, the most important things will get done.
Balancing priorities and time management are easier if you
have rocks in your head.
